When you wish upon a star...
...you just might meet Mickey Mouse.
For thousands of terminally ill children, their simple wish to visit the Magic Kingdom and hug Mickey has indeed come true, thanks in no small part to Katy Moss Warner, our special guest this Thursday night, June 26th, on SafeLawns & Landscapes, The Radio Show.
More on Katy's Disney connection in a bit.
A visionary and dynamo, Katy Moss Warner has a sustainable picture of America's future - and it begins in our own back yards. She is currently president Emeritus of the American Horticultural Society (AHS), a national, non-profit, member-based organization with a bold vision of "making America a nation of gardeners, a land of gardens."
Prior to that, Katy was at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., one of 11 Loeb Fellows at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. This mid-career fellowship program allowed Katy to focus attention on the current challenges we face to enhance the quality of life in our constructed and natural environments throughout America.
For 24-years Katy oversaw all horticultural operations at Walt Disney World in Florida. As the Director of Disney's Horticultural and Environmental Initiatives, she was responsible for the landscapes of four theme parks, 15 resort properties and more than 70 miles of roads on the 30,500-acre property. Katy focused a great deal of her career on earth-friendly practices, including minimizing the use of pesticides, increasing the use of compost, minimizing waste, and encouraging native, natural landscapes. In addition, Katy developed a keen interest in children's gardens - particularly garden features for children that are fun and interactive.
Which leads us back to making one special dream of some very special kids a reality. Katy served as Chair of the Landscape Advisory Committee of "Give Kids the World," a foundation with a magical village of 35 acres, and dedicated to granting more than 4,000 children and their families each year their wish to see Mickey Mouse.
Katy currently serves on the board of "America in Bloom", a national awards program that encourages beautification as a way of planting pride in communities across America. She also serves on the Advisory Council of "The Growing Connection", an international organization sponsored by the United Nations that encourages youth in America and developing countries to grow food and share their successes and challenges with each other.
